STUDENT CHAMPIONS
Reed Kerne
Reed, a student at St. John Paul II High School, has never needed a blood donation, but he knows firsthand how important blood donation is.
“My mom had to receive bags of blood right after having me and it helps me know this is important,” he said.
When he heard of the opportunity to champion though a friend, he and his mother Kallie leapt at the opportunity to do so. He will be spreading awareness about blood donation among his peers.
Sofia Moreno-Salinas
Despite her busy school life at Alamo Heights High School, Sofia still finds time to give back to her community. She is a member of the National Charity League and has shared her time volunteering at Haven for Hope, Meals on Wheels, and Snack Packs 4 Kids.
Sofia wants to share her gifts with The Blood & tissue Center Foundation because of her innate desire to help other people.
“I am motivated because I am helping and saving people’s lives,” she said.
Jonah Nirenberg
Jonah comes from a donor family. He’s had family members receive blood, and others, like his father Ron, who regularly donates blood.
Jonah has taken part in Students of Service (SOS) and has volunteered both locally and internationally and also serves as president of the National Honor Society at his high school, CAST Tech.
If he isn’t reading books or walking his dog Tenshi, Jonah is working on self-improvement. He enjoys challenging himself.
Savannah Salas
As a sophomore at Antonian High School, Savannah realized that her voice can reach her peers and spread awareness of blood donation within high schools.
She has volunteered through school organizations and her church, and is excited to partner with people who have been directly affected by blood donations.
“I want to work with those in our community to help those who may not be getting the support they need.”
CHAMPION
Oralia Ortiz
Early on in life, Oralia’s mother taught her daughter life lessons in compassion, kindness, and community.
Her campaign is inspired by loved ones who needed blood donations. Oralia, a Strategic Account Manager at DOCUmation, is determined to rally her network to make sure patients receive the blood they need.
“Being able to bring awareness to the high schools again and the challenge to be a part of something so big and meaningful that in turn saves people’s lives is beyond inspiration.”
